American mahjong is easier to shop for when you treat the set as equipment, not décor. These are the facts Mahjong Master lists on every tile product, and what to check before you buy.
Tile count
A standard American set has 152 tiles: the three suits (dots, bams, craks), winds, dragons, flowers, jokers, and the extra tiles used with a National Mah Jongg League-style card. Many of our sets include 160 tiles — the 152 core tiles plus 8 blanks or extra flowers/jokers for spares. If a listing does not state the count, read the contents before you buy.
Size
Home tiles are usually about 1.2–1.4 inches long. That size racks cleanly on standard 18-inch and 20-inch racks and is easy to read across a card table. Travel tiles run smaller and can be harder to read at night or for players with low vision.
Material
Most quality American tiles are engraved resin or acrylic. Heavier tiles feel more substantial, make a satisfying sound, and resist chipping. Four-layer tiles with a colored center stripe are a popular premium option. Avoid very light plastic tiles if you play weekly — they wear faster and slide on the mat.
What's in the box
A complete American set should include the tiles, a storage bag or case, and dice. Many sets also add a Charleston guide or a rules card. Check the listing for racks and a mat — those are usually sold separately.
Readability
Look for large numbers and bold, high-contrast symbols. If your group plays in the evening, avoid faint engravings or low-contrast colorways. Our product photos show the actual tile faces so you can judge readability before checkout.
